30 years ago, Touriga Nacional was not even part of the 15 most planted grape varieties in Portugal. It is currently the 3rd most planted grape variety, right after Aragonêz/Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca, representing 7% of the national plantation. The largest area of Touriga is in the Douro, followed by Dão where it is the 2nd most planted variety, then Alentejo and Trás-os-Montes, and with a relevant presence in regions such as Bairrada, Beiras, Lisboa and Tejo.
It’s a very plastic variety, capable of producing wines that are very different from each other. Without a barrel ageing it produces elegant wines, but it also has a special appetite for the barrel ageing, it doesn't allow itself to be eaten by the wood.
Being a variety with great personality, it is capable of producing all types of wines – from high quality sparkling wines to Port wines. Producers are increasingly committed to release this grape variety solo, whether in the red version or in the rosé version, and in Dão there are those who vinify it without the film, making a high quality Blanc de Noirts white or sparkling wine.
In our store you will find 2 examples of this style of Blanc de Noirs white wine, but also more than 20 sparkling wines 100% Touriga Nacional, and of course the already famous dry and perfumed rosés from Touriga where we have around 60 products. The biggest offer is undoubtedly single varietal reds, with an offer of 225 wines from the north to the south of the country, and prices starting at 5 euros and in some cases exceeding 100 euros.
We have selected among our highly recommended reds, the 100% Touriga Nacional, where all regions are represented, and obviously where the price-quality ratio is excellent.
