News from the Tejo region

The Tejo wine region, one of the oldest in Portugal, is made up of a total of 7,000 hectares that produce around 10 per cent of the national total each year.

Here we find three distinct zones in terms of climate and soil composition, which produce very different wines.

The Bairro, located to the north of the Tejo, highlands made up of hills and wide plains, rich in limestone and clay soils.

Charneca, on the left bank of the Tejo, with sandy soils that force the vines to struggle, and in turn produce more complex fruit.

And the Campo, on the banks of the Tejo, whose proximity to the river offers a more maritime climate, balancing the temperatures and consequently influencing the fruity character, acidity and freshness of the wines.

The region is dominated by Companhia das Lezírias, Portugal's largest agricultural and forestry holding with around 9,000 hectares, some of which are vineyards, with the Tyto Alba brand that many of you have probably already bought in our shop, and now you can also try the other brands of this century-old producer, namely Herdade de Catapereiro with wines at very attractive prices, the estate's single varietals under the Companhia das Lezírias Series Singulares brand and the top-of-the-range Companhia das Lezírias 1836 brand.

Another new producer in the shop is Pinhal da Torre. Located in the Alpiarça area, it has two estates, Quinta do Alqueve and Quinta de São João, which produce some of the region's most outstanding wines, especially the single varietals under the Pinhal da Torre brand.

Also in the Alpiarça area is Quinta da Atela, with 150 hectares dedicated to winemaking, where we highlight the famous liqueur wines from the Fernão Pires grape variety and, for those who prefer the new world style, single varietal wines from international varieties such as Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and the red varieties Syrah, Grenache and Petit Verdot.

Finally, and also new to the shop, Pedro Sereno and the Marquês de Tomar brand, here already in the classic style of the region where the old vineyards of the Tomar area in the north of the Tejo region dominate.

Whether your style is more classic or more modern, the Tejo region is where you'll find the wines that best suit you and along the way you'll find centuries-old producers and unique wines at very attractive prices.
