News from the Port Wine World

Although Port wine has a centuries-old history, after all this time there are still many news, some of them exciting for all of us who are fans of this unique wine.

Recently, the Port Wine Institute approved a new category within aged tawnies with no age indication, the 50 year old Ports, and we've been releasing a lot of wines from reference producers lately.

In the case of white Ports, the regulations for whites with no age indication are not as strict as for tawnies, and some companies are even releasing 60, 80 and 100 year old white Ports, as is the case with Quinta da Devesa and Quinta das Lamelas, two producers with a tremendous stock of white Ports in cask that delight connoisseurs of old Ports.

Some estates have their stocks of ageing wines and are already able to release tawnies and whites, such as Quinta do Vallado with the new 10 years old white and Cadão with the new 20 year old tawny.

In the category of premium ruby ports, the vintages, we are always releasing new wines and we recently we added to our store several single estate vintages from 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2020. As a rule, vintages are released three years after the year of harvest, but it's up to the producer to decide how long they want the wine to age in the bottle, and sometimes it can be released just five or six years after the year of harvest.

In terms of single estate ports, there are always interesting developments when a still wine producer chooses to enter the Port wine segment. The most recent case is that of Luis Leocádio's Titan project, which began its adventure in the world of Port wine with the Titan of Port brand.

Cristiano Van Zeller is no newcomer to the industry, but he recently revived the Van Zellers & Co brand with some noteworthy wines, such as Ocean Aged Port 2020, a wine that was aged submerged 10 meters deep in the Atlantic Ocean. Also noteworthy are the superb Ports from the 1935 and 1940 vintages, from the vast stock of wine that has been passed down from generation to generation.

Finally, for those who want to try new brands and new profiles, this week we released the Peace and Love brand (Carlos Alonzo of Piano wines), with a dry white and a pink, both perfect for cocktails, as well as the Butler Nephew brand with a 10 and 20 year old Port in a luxury Decanter bottle.

There are always many new additions to the Port range, but for now take a look at the new releases that we've highlighted.
