Jaen, perfect reds for summer

Jaen, perfect reds for summer

Jaen is none other than the famous Mencia from the Bierzo region of Spain. Here it has gained fame in the Dão, where plantations have been growing in recent decades, but its growing reputation has meant that it can also be found in regions such as the Douro, Bairrada, Lisbon and the Tejo.

In general, Jaen wine are not powerful, but they are harmonious. Complete wines without excess. In colder years the style can be close to an elegant Pinot Noir. In warmer years the exuberant fruit can be reminiscent of a Syrah, but it can also show characteristics reminiscent of a Cabernet Franc.

It has a soft structure which means that these are wines that can be drunk slightly chilled. Its silky tannins make it an ideal partner for pairing with appetisers, risottos, pasta, pizza, grilled meats... In short, an ideal partner for summer dishes.

Interest in the variety has been growing and the wines are gaining ground on the international market, but it still remains a variety that is mainly appreciated by connoisseurs. That's why we're bringing it to you today, because we believe that these are wines with much greater potential than they've already achieved. Shall we get to know some?

The brand new Meia Serra from Casa Santos Lima is the perfect choice for those who want to try a Jaen at a reduced price (just 7.20 + VAT).

Quinta das Maias is a wine not to be missed! Very pretty aroma, all red fruit, some ripe cherry, pine needles and a touch of barrel in the background. Beautiful acidity on the palate, even fresher fruit than the aroma suggests, ripe and elegant tannins. Cheerful and at the same time serious and very consistent. 17.5 points Vinho Grandes Escolhas.

Come and see our suggestions today and become an unconditional fan of our Jaen.
