The region that is now internationally renowned for its enviably fresh white wines was once dominated by red grape varieties. However, red wines from the Vinho Verde region have always suffered from a stereotype of poor quality and undrinkable acidity, restricting their consumption to the region alone.
But Vinho Verde red wines are much more than this. In addition to the traditional Vinhão, we have grape varieties such as Alvarelhão, which, on top of that, produces wines that fit perfectly with the current demand for wines with low extraction and low alcohol content.
In our suggestions today, you will find traditional reds made from the Vinhão grape variety (wines with a distinctive profile, but far from the rustic and difficult profile of the past) but also reds with a totally different profile, which, in a blind tasting, would hardly be associated with the region, such as Sou Alvarelhão or Soalheiro Oppaco. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the diversity of the Vinho Verde region and discover the region's red wines, which go far beyond Vinhão.
