Rare grape varieties - the Portuguese identity

Portugal has resisted the introduction of foreign grape varieties, a factor that has helped build a strong and unique identity in the world. We are proud of our indigenous grape varieties, and of being the country where you can find Touriga Nacional, Antão Vaz or Loureiro!

There are around 250 indigenous grape varieties that have been winning over consumers. And while some of them have already become familiar to the general consumer, there are others that are still illustrious unknowns.

Some of them have even fallen into disuse and have been revived by a small number of producers. Callum, for example, has been an ex-libris of the Castelo Branco district for many centuries. To save it from extinction, 92 clones were planted at Herdade do Lousial. The result is a wine with remarkable acidity, a striking structure, a creamy texture and a delicate retro aroma.

The Batoca grape variety is the apple of Santa Cristina's eye, and they are the only producer of a single varietal wine from this variety. Clear, with an intensely fruity aroma with notes of tree fruit such as apple, pear and some citrus fruit. On the palate it's smooth and balanced, with a well-marked and refreshing aftertaste.

Take a look at Casa Velha Samarrinho, a grape variety that was only ‘reborn’ in 2013. Bright and citrus-coloured. Aroma of strong intensity, with vegetable, tropical and stone fruit notes standing out. On the palate it's fresh, vibrant, voluminous and has good persistence.
