Madeira beyond fortified wines

Madeira beyond fortified wines

When you think of wines from the island of Madeira, you immediately think of the marvellous fortified wines that are produced there and that have won worldwide fame. However, Madeira is increasingly offering us beautiful still wines that you really must get to know.

We begin by suggesting the brand new wines from Octavio Freitas Winery. Octávio Freitas is a Michelin-starred chef with a strong connection to his Madeiran origins. His wines are a sincere compliment to his island, its people and the terroir of Calheta. The Chef likes to call this micro-production ‘wine of the territory’, an allusion to the location in Calheta, with extreme sun exposure, an altitude of around 100 metres and a proximity of around 200 metres to the sea, which translates into sublime wines full of personality.

Justino's wines are a must on the island. Don't miss out on wines as distinctive as Arnsburger Verdelho, Caracol Listrão or Tinta Negra rosé.

The wines of Companhia dos Profetas and Villões, from the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, endeavour to express their terroir of origin. As Porto Santo is the most arid area in Portugal, the oldest island in the Portuguese archipelagos and also the warmest, with sandy limestone soils, it shares its existing grape varieties with Jerez and the Canary Islands. So what are Porto Santo wines like? Take a look at today's suggestions and get to know Madeira beyond fortified wines.
