The Orange Wines trend

The Orange Wines trend

Orange wines are attracting a growing number of enthusiasts, and bars specialised in this style are becoming increasingly common in markets such as New York, London and Tokyo.

The greatest reference for this style is in Friuli, by the hand of the unavoidable Josko Gravner, but today you can find good examples in almost every producing country, and Portugal is no exception.

But what are the famous orange wines anyway? An orange wine is nothing more than a white wine with tanning, in other words, it's a white wine made as if it were a red wine, where the skins and other solid parts of the bunch remain in maceration (tanning) in the must, unlike a traditional white wine.

This skin contact gives the wine body, tannins and greater intensity of flavour. In a dark glass, in a blind tasting, they often pass for reds.

Shall we get to know some of the best Portuguese examples? We recommend, of course, Anselmo Mendes Curtimenta, an iconic wine from the Vinho Verde region and the country.

From the Dão we also have the beautiful Casa da Passarella Fugitivo Curtimenta, pure character, personality and differentiation.

Also, from the Alentejo, you can't miss Moinante Curtimenta by António Maçanita. A wine with a serious nose, grapefruit, orange blossom and some green plum.

Take a look at our selection and let yourself fall in love with the Orange Wines too.
