The Loureiro grape variety deserves special mention as it is becoming one of the most important white grape varieties in the Vinho Verde region, whether blended with the region's Alvarinho or Trajadura.
Although it originated in the Lima river valley, where the co-operative wineries of Ponte de Lima and Ponte da Barca have always considered it the grape of choice for their more premium wines, it is now practically widespread throughout the Vinho Verde region. Even in the Monção and Melgaço sub-region, where the Alvarinho variety has always been favored.
It's an old, high-quality grape variety that produces musts with an accentuated aroma, giving wines a citrus color, a fine, elegant aroma that ranges from citrus fruit (lemon) to floral (freesia, rose) and honeyed (bouquet) and a fruity, slightly acidic, fresh, harmonious, full-bodied and persistent flavor.
As it is a fairly pure grape variety in the wines it produces, more and more producers are opting to bottle single varietal wines, which are usually low-alcohol wines, in line with the current market trends.
The fruity and light style, combined with the low alcohol content, make these white wines very easy to drink but at the same time very fresh and gastronomic.
This is the motto for the success of the Loureiro grape variety, which has more and more offerings available on the market and more and more fans of this style of wine.
