The demand for wines from the islands (Azores and Madeira) has been growing. A common feature between both, besides being from Portuguese islands, of course, is the fact that they are grown on volcanic soil, producing wines where salinity, tension and structure are the watchwords.
The production of still wines on our islands is very much based on white wines. The proximity to the sea, the volcanic soil, the unpredictable climate, the very small production volumes and the use of indigenous grape varieties make them niche wines, very original and charismatic, and this seems to be the secret behind the high demand.
Today, we suggest wines from the islands that have received excellent ratings in industry magazines, a great starting point if you don't know where to begin.
Vinha Centenária and Vinha dos Aards, from Azores Wine Company, are two ex-libris wines from the Azores, with maximum ratings in industry magazines. These are small-production wines for true connoisseurs.
If you are looking for something more affordable, we suggest the equally well-rated Cerca dos Frades Terrantez or Eruptio Verdelho. Excellent options for discovering the essence of Azorean wines.
If you only know fortified wines from Madeira, now is the time to discover Atlantis Reserve Verdelho or Justinos Colombo Arnsburger Verdelho. Both have excellent reviews in industry magazines.
