Of all the regions in Portugal, Dão is the most exciting at the moment. On one hand, due to the profile of the reds, very Burgundy-style, and the whites from the Encruzado variety, considered by many to be the Portuguese white variety with the greatest potential, which is even being trialled in other regions of the country, and on the other hand, due to the emergence of new innovative projects that result in the release of wines with very different profiles from the classic style of the region.
We have therefore invested heavily in releasing new wines and new projects from this region, which we strongly recommend to all our members looking for wines outside the box.
Recently added to our shop, we would like to highlight the projects from Quinta Madre de Água, Quinta das Queimas, Quinta da Perdonda, Quinta da Alameda and Fundação S. José. In these producers you'll find the classic Dão style with blends based on the native grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro and Jaen, and the single varietal from Touriga Nacional, the region's most typical red variety, which according to the history was born here but later exported to the Douro where it was incorporated into Port wine blends. You'll also find the famous single varietals whites from Encruzado, a grape variety that ages very well in the bottle and delights those who like more evolved whites.
In terms of innovative projects, we'd like to highlight Dirk Niepoort's new Garrafeiras at Quinta da Lomba, the Peter Eckert's experiments at Quinta das Marias with his ‘Out of the Bottle’ wines, Nuno Mira do Ó's irreverent wines with the new Caminhante label and, finally, the Quinta do Mondego's single varietals under the Munda label, the estate's most premium range.
Practically all the wines recommended, whether in a more classic or modern style, have the particularity of having an alcoholic strength of between 12.5% and 13.5%, the market trend for both whites and reds, which nowadays in some warmer regions, such as those in the south of Portugal, is practically impossible to achieve.
Take a look at our recommendations and find your style, whether it's the more Burgundian Dão or the more irreverent Dão.
