When we think of Portuguese wines, it is impossible to ignore the unique character of Vinho Verde. Its freshness is perhaps its most striking feature — resulting in light, vibrant and extremely versatile wines, perfect for hot days or relaxed meals.
Another distinctive feature is the slight effervescence found in many of them, which adds to an even more refreshing sensation. The diversity of grape varieties also plays an essential role: Alvarinho, Loureiro, Arinto and Trajadura give rise to very distinct profiles, ranging from the most aromatic and floral (Marquês de Lara Alvarinho, Pequenos Rebentos Loureiro...) to options with greater structure and complexity (Quinta da Lixa Alvarinho Reserve, Anselmo Mendes Parcela Única...) . More than a single style, Vinho Verde is a veritable universe of possibilities.
Interestingly, the term “Verde” (Green) does not refer to the colour, but rather to the wine’s youth. Traditionally consumed young, it favours freshness and lightness, although some versions — especially those made from Alvarinho — also reveal an interesting capacity for development.
