In Portugal, and practically everywhere else in the world, more reds are produced than whites, and the latter ones are associated with strong seasonality - whites are more commonly thought of in summer, by the pool or at a relaxed lunch with friends. In winter, we tend to prefer reds, forgetting that we have excellent whites to accompany the colder days.
As a rule, these are whites that are fermented/aged in barrels, rich, full-bodied, more concentrated and textured, and with good ageing potential. These are whites that accompany more elaborate dishes just as brilliantly as a red.
We begin by suggesting Kompassus Bical, a wine full of character with ‘fragrant notes of peach, hints of orange blossom, a unique touch of damp earth, all enveloped in very light smoky notes. With volume and balance, an excellent white, light and intense at the same time.’ (17.5 points Vinho Grandes Escolhas)
Another wine not to be missed is Teixinha Field Blend, the new project from Herdade da Malhadinha Nova, this time in the terroir of Serra de São Mamede. Very mineral on the nose, shy on the fruit, but incisive on the palate, where it shows good tension and a very elegant and complex texture with several layers. (94 Points, Jamie Good; 91 Points, Marcelo Copello)
