It is the white grape variety of choice in (probably) the most famous wine region in the world—Burgundy—but its fame and potential have left no one indifferent, and it has slowly spread throughout the rest of the world, with Portugal, of course, being no exception.
It is highly versatile, and the predominant aromas, as well as the style of wine produced, vary greatly depending on the conditions in which it is planted and the winemaking methods used.
Here, despite being a country that prides itself on and prefers indigenous varieties, there are some beautiful examples of Chardonnay. As a rule, we are talking about small productions or limited editions, which producers launch on the market to make a difference. Shall we take a look at some?
Adega Mãe Chardonnay is a wine with rich aromas, featuring fruity notes of apple, peach and a hint of tropical fruit. There is a subtle presence of the barrel in which it fermented, which is very well integrated into this aromatic ensemble. Good volume in the mouth, creamy, balanced by good acidity, resulting in an intense and fruity finish. An excellent example of a fantastic Portuguese Chardonnay.
Another beautiful option is Cabeça de Toiro Chardonnay (with a 38% discount this month). It is a Grand Reserve with unique characteristics. The 12-month ageing in French oak barrels gives it a complex aroma with notes of green apple, chamomile and honey. In the mouth, it is unctuous, balanced by good acidity. The finish is harmonious and prolonged.
One thing is certain, we are talking about one of the great white grape varieties in the world, which is always worth getting to know!
