Of the fats used around the world, olive oil is certainly the most appreciated in our country, and Portugal, and the Alentejo in particular, have exceptional conditions for growing olive trees and producing olives.
It's not known for sure when olive oil began to be produced in the Alentejo, but the tradition in Mediterranean countries is ancient and records of this product are quite old, with the Roman historian Strabo referring to Alentejo Olive Oil as a product of excellent quality, imported by Rome 2,000 years ago.
Alentejo olive oil is extracted between October and February from olives that are at their optimum ripeness for obtaining high-quality oils. The four main varieties found in the region are Galega, Cordovil de Serpa, Verdeal Alentejana and Cobrançosa.
Alentejo olive oil is a unique product whose main characteristics are its fruity aroma, subtle or even absent bitterness and spiciness, and notes of apple, dried fruit, tomato, grass or leaves.
We've made a selection of high-quality Alentejo olive oils, which will be the perfect accompaniment to that fresh salad, a beautiful roast fish or simply a delicious slice of Alentejo bread. Let´s find out more?
