Lágrima Port represents one of the oldest traditions in the production of white Port (although there are already companies producing reds). Its pronounced sweetness (more than 130g of sugar per litre) and liqueur-like texture is the result of an early interruption in fermentation, thus producing a very concentrated white Port, full of fruity aromas, which is extremely satisfying when served chilled.
Its name Lágrima (Tears) came about thanks to the tears that run down the glass when you shake it, due to its high sugar content.
It should be served cooler than other Ports, between 8 and 10ºC, and is perfect to accompany desserts or to drink on its own.
Shall we go on to some suggestions?
Real Companhia Velha (-13%) is a sublime wine, of enormous aromatic intensity and freshness, with aromas of sultanas and great complexity provided by ageing in wood. Sweet and structured, full of fruity flavours with a long, persistent finish. A wine not to be missed if you're trying a Lágrima for the first time.
Caves Santa Marta, on the other hand, is unmissable for its value for money (just 6.38+VAT). As well as its fantastic sweetness and floral notes, it has delicious notes of dried fruit from the ripeness of the grapes.
