Alvarinho vs Sauvignon Blanc — which one wins?

Alvarinho vs Sauvignon Blanc — which one wins?

If you’ve ever been torn between a fresh, aromatic white wine, chances are you were choosing between Alvarinho and Sauvignon Blanc. Although similar at first glance, they are wines with distinct personalities.

Alvarinho, closely associated with Vinho Verde, is more balanced and structured, with notes of citrus, peach and a floral touch. It has more body, better ageing potential and pairs very well with food, especially fish and seafood. Sauvignon Blanc, on the other hand, although not a native grape variety, is found all over the country. It is lighter, very aromatic and characterised by notes of passion fruit, lime and fresh herbs — perfect for relaxed moments or as an aperitif.

Ultimately, the choice depends on the occasion: Sauvignon Blanc wins you over from the very first sip with its intensity, whilst Alvarinho, more elegant and complex, comes into its own as you work your way through the bottle.
