Malvasia wines, the sweetest version of Madeira wine

The island of Madeira is rich in diverse terroirs. As a volcanic island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Madeira's vineyards are exposed to ocean breezes, and grapes grown at lower altitudes can develop distinct saline and iodine notes. The island's soils are acidic, rich in minerals, iron and phosphorus, but low in potassium—factors that contribute to the wine's characteristic acidity. In fact, this acidity is one of the most notable characteristics of Madeira wine, allowing it to remain fresh even after many years in the bottle.

Today we will focus on Madeira wines produced with the Malvasia grape variety, which originated the sweet Madeiras (minimum sugar content of 96g/L), the richest and most unctuous Madeira wines.

In this selection, you will find wines with an indication of age (5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50), but you will also find wines from a single harvest (Colheitas or Frasqueiras - the highest category of Madeira wine).

If you have never given Madeira wine a chance, now is the right time. Indulge in a sweet Madeira, such as Blandys 5 years or H M Borges 10 years.

If you are an unconditional fan of the style, take this opportunity to venture into a Frasqueira wine. It will be a unique and memorable experience!
