Dão: why does Touriga Nacional shine here?

In Dão, Touriga Nacional (widely recognised as Portugal's finest grape variety) finds one of its most elegant and balanced expressions. The altitude of the vineyards, often between 400 and 800 metres, allows for slow ripening, with warm days and cool nights that preserve acidity and intensify aromas.

The poor, well-drained granite soils contribute to wines with firm structure but fine, well-integrated tannins. Thus, a naturally intense and concentrated grape variety gains a more refined profile in Dão, without losing depth.

Aromatically, floral notes stand out (especially violet) accompanied by wild fruits and subtle balsamic nuances. The result is precise, fresh wines with excellent ageing potential.

While in other regions Touriga Nacional may show greater power, in Dão it reveals above all elegance and balance, characteristics that make it truly distinctive.

Discover our suggestions today — from a brand new Dona Sancha, a renowned Casa da Passarella or a surprising Quinta da Gandarada — and find your next great Touriga Nacional from Dão.
