To conclude this series of suggestions for unforgettable wines, we end on a high note with ‘dessert’ wines, as Portugal is the country of great fortified wines.
Quinta do Crasto 50 Years Old (97 Points/Highly Recommended by Revista de Vinhos magazine) reveals great complexity and aromatic depth, with notes of dried fruit, toasted almonds, candied orange peel, honey, sweet spices and a slight hint of iodine. All the aromatic elements are harmoniously integrated, reflecting the maturity and balance of the blend. On the palate, it shows great concentration and a velvety texture, with an excellent balance between structure, freshness and elegance. A great wine!
From Madeira, we suggest Barbeito O Americano Malvasia 50 years, one of the 30 wines in Vinho Grandes Escolhas' TOP 2024. Fabulously complex aroma, with smoky notes, molasses, ripe floral and vinegar. Superb on the palate, with layers of salty notes, jams, spices, curry and mustard seeds. Pronounced acidity, but impeccably integrated, with a bittersweet finish not to be missed!
And to finish off in style, if you have never tried a Carcavelos wine, here is a fantastic suggestion: Quinta da Bela Vista Carcavelos 80 years. A wine with an intense aroma denoting age and great evolution. Notes of spices and dried fruits, enveloped in a smooth and pleasant vanilla from the wood. Velvety, full-bodied and well balanced between its structure and a remarkable final acidity. 92 points by Andreas Larson and 93 points in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
