The Abreu Callado Foundation is a private law foundation, which has been granted the status of a private social solidarity institution for many years, having a public benefit nature.

It was instituted in 1948 by the will of Dr. Cosme de Campos Callado, and is based in Benavila (Avis) in a manor building with a rustic Alentejo design, whose largest chimney still has the date of 1758, proof of the longevity of a house that has secular roots.

The 42 hectares of its vineyards are also located in Benavila, on clay-loam terrains, and part of these pioneer strains (still in production) are already fifty years old. The proximity of the Maranhão Dam provides a microclimate amenity that is reflected in the high quality of Abreu Callado wines. The Foundation's winery is (always) installed in the host village, and uses modern processes alongside some traditional methods of processing, vinification and aging (the cement bowls and vats, for example, installed in 1956, are still in functioning).
