Bucelas has been famous since the 19th century and its demarcation took place over a century ago, as part of the first post-Pombaline demarcations.
Here, whites (more precisely Arinto whites) are king, and only whites are entitled to DOC Bucelas.
It is now known that Arinto was born precisely in Bucelas (no wonder it is here that we find varietals of unrivalled quality), and only then did it spread to the rest of the country, becoming the most important white grape variety in Portugal.
The main characteristic that everyone recognises is its acidic character, which is preserved even in warmer climates.
The oldest and most iconic brand is Bucellas, created in 1939 by Caves Velhas, followed by Prova Régia, a brand from Quinta da Romeira that has been around for over 20 years. There are still not many producers in Bucelas, but in recent years there have been some new ones.
The most recent addition is Quinta das Murgas from renowned winemaker Bernardo Cabral. The quinta produces niche wines that are highly appreciated on both the national and international markets, thanks to the highly calcareous terroir that gives Bucelas wines their unique personality. With grape varieties such as Arinto, Esgana-Cão and Touriga Franca, the estate celebrates viticulture with respect for tradition and innovation.
