As has become tradition, we end the list of the year's best sellers with the super premium red wines, the price range above €20 and which are usually the wines we choose for special occasions.
In this short list of 30 best-selling wines, the Esporão Reserve remains in the lead as it was in 2023 and Fita Preta Palpite Reserve in second place, which means that the years go by but they continue to be the wines of choice for our members when it comes to selecting good company to celebrate with.
In third place is Cartuxa from the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation, a wine that shares some similarities with the house's top-of-the-range Pera Manca.
Curiously, the first three positions are occupied by wines from the Alentejo, and this region contributes with half of the wines that make up this top 30.
The Douro is undoubtedly the most well-known Portuguese region and contributes with 10 wines to this short list, but when it comes to deciding what to buy, most of our members opt for the super premium red wines from the Alentejo, either because of the gastronomic profile of these wines, or the fact that the Alentejo probably has lower prices than the Douro, a difficult region for red wine production, with a large percentage of the grapes allocated to Port wine and, above all, a high altitude farming region, where the cost of producing wine is much higher than other regions in Portugal.
Only 5 wines come from other regions, with 2 wines from Lisbon, 1 wine from Setúbal, 1 wine from Tejo and 1 wine from Dão.
All of these regions have a good presence in the best-selles lists, whether if white or red wines, but when it comes to selecting a top-of-the-range wine, the tendency is still to go for the two most famous regions, the Alentejo and the Douro.
Across the country, more and more producers are releasing their super premium wines, which are usually labelled Grand Reserve, so the tendency will be for customers to be curious about tasting these top wines when they are already regular consumers of the other lower-priced references.
We hope so, because the wines of Portugal are much more than the Douro and Alentejo regions, and there are real treasures to be explored in practically every corner of the country.
Until then, take a look at the full list of super premium wines chosen by our members and if you want to start or strengthen your cellar with high quality wines, you can start here.
