When we think of Bairrada, the Baga grape variety or the region's famous sparkling wines immediately spring to mind, but for many wine connoisseurs Bairrada is more of a white than a red wine region (even though they only account for 20% of production), and it's easy to see why, thanks to the enormous quality of the whites produced there.
The most common blend in the region consists of Maria Gomes (known as Fernão Pires in other regions), Bical and Cercial, where each variety plays its part. Maria Gomes, being the most aromatic of the three, is responsible for the flavours, Bical gives the wine body and unctuousness and Cercial contributes with a vibrant acidity.
A beautiful example of this traditional blend is Botão Vinha das Lamas. A wine with enormous aromatic freshness that lingers in the mouth, with lots of citrus and apricot flavours. The ageing in used barrels ‘opened up’ the wine without marking it, resulting in a very pure, expressive and delicious wine.
And speaking of Botão wines, which are new in our shop, we would also like to highlight the Botão Bical Vinha das Lamas. The peach and apricot notes are the most distinctive, accompanied by discreet, sensual hints of tropical fruit. Wines from the Bical grape variety tend to have excellent ageing potential. An enviable longevity is therefore predicted for this wine
We couldn't finish without leaving you with some suggestions for Cercial single varietals, such as Kompassus or Quinta das Bágeiras. Two classics from the region that perfectly express this new star of the region. A grape variety with striking acidity and enormous elegance.
Whatever the grape variety, Bairrada's terroir is perfect for producing whites full of personality, vibrant, with great ageing ability, that deserve all our attention!
