An LBV is a Port produced from a single harvest, aged between 4 and 6 years in oak so that oxidative evolution is slow. Hence the name Late Bottle Vintage, as it is bottled later than a Vintage. Although it has excellent ageing potential (estimated at around 15 years in the bottle), it also has the advantage of being able to be consumed young to reveal its full intensity and potential.
They are often seen by consumers as low-quality Vintages: a completely wrong idea, as they are Ports of great charisma, with young fruit, freshness and an intensity that should be recognised. Basically, they are superior quality wines, with the enormous advantage of being available at very affordable prices.
They can be filtered or unfiltered, and the choice in this case depends on whether you prefer a more rustic wine with more genuine aromas (unfiltered), or a more elegant wine without sediment (filtered).
In conclusion, they offer an excellent combination of quality, affordability and readiness for consumption, combining tradition and innovation in wine production. We therefore leave you with some suggestions for LBVs priced under €20, so that you can confirm the enormous quality of this category.
