Portugal has a long tradition in the field of brandies. Historic brands, with long years of ageing, perfect for an evening with friends.
Portuguese brandies have always stood out, firstly for their quality - they generally have intense aromas and good acidity levels - but also for their diversity, as different styles are produced from the north to the south of the country, with a huge variety of grape varieties, more or less marked by the ageing in wood.
Due to its specific characteristics, the Vinho Verde region leads the way in the production of brandies, an interesting fact given that Portugal has one of only three exclusive DOs in the world for certifying brandies. This is the Lourinhã DO, which is joined by the world-famous Cognac and Armagnac.
As for the designations, which are sometimes a little confusing for the consumer, here are a few clarifications: an Old brandy is aged for at least two years, Velhíssima for three years, VSOP (very superior old pale) for four years and the top category, XO (extra old), for at least six years in cask.
